Tough Decisions
When a child is sick or injured it is usually straightforward to decide about it's treatment. It is because parents informed by doctors about medical condition of their child make a decision which is in the best interest of the child. But, it is not always that simple.
Sometimes, there is a disagreement between doctors and parents as to what is in the child’s best interest. In such cases, usually, the treatment cannot be provided.
Therefore, it is very important to discuss things relevant to that treatment until an agreement is reached. To make it easier a second medical opinion can be sought. Otherwise, it may be necessary for a court to decide what is in the best interest of a child. It is especially important if the child needs a life saving treatment.
But, before it gets to court, parents should be provided with information about what the treatment will involve, it's benefits, chances of getting these benefits, alternatives, risks, how serious the risk is and what will happen if the treatment is not implemented. Only then parents can make an informed decision.
Another thing about which parents should know is that the time to decide about a treatment is unlimited. So, they can get as much time as they need to decide. However, it is different when a small patient's treatment is urgently required to save that child’s life. Then, time is of the essence.
So, it is mainly in parents' hands to make decisions about their children's treatment. But, doctors should be there to clearly explain to them medical state of their child and available methods of treatment.
