For some people it is very difficult to seek help when they are miserable. Family, friends and institutions may do everything possible to help them but if they do not want this help than it is all for nothing. It does not mean that it is not worth trying. They may eventually change their mind and accept the help. Such concerns were considered at an inquest at the Coroner's Court in Boston on the 15th March 2018 relating to an elderly woman's death who had not accepted help from her daughters and social services.

Unfortunately, she committed suicide. Her body has been found by the police near water where she had drowned. There is no doubt that it was a suicide because she left a note saying that she has enough of it. But, what were her issues?

She was suffering from Crohn's syndrome and dementia. Besides, the lady lived with her partner with whom she was unhappy. However, the elderly lady was receiving help from social services but the lady who visited her did not notice that her partner is violent towards her. She testified in court and said that she would always talk with the elderly lady one-to-one and that the partner's behaviour has never been threatening when she was there.

But, one of the daughter's opinion is different. She claimed that her mother once came to visit her. She even wanted to stay overnight at her daughter's home saying that she is scared of going back home. However, her mother would often change her mind and would not like to leave her partner.

Another issue was that the old lady had a mess in her home and lack of clean clothes. She would sometimes fall asleep with a cigarette. All of it caused huge concerns among the sister who put faith in social services. But, the latter was not able to do much because of lack of will to change of their mother.

So, some people are miserable but are afraid or not willing to change because they used to a situation in which they live. As a family we should do everything possible to help them change but it is not an easy task as we cannot force them to change.
