Unfortunaley, a lot of people smoke these days. The most often used method is called cold turkey which means quitting without any help. About 90% of people try to quit smoking like this but it is the least effective method as only between 4% and 7% manages to quit without any therapy or medications. 

A more effective method is called a behavioural therapy. It involves working with a counselor who can try to help you with finding was not to smoke and to identify situations which make you want to smoke. 

While the previous method requires a lot of work with social issues a nicotine replacement therapy works more automatically. But, both of these therapies can be combined.  Nevertheless, a nicotine replacement therapy can include a nicotine gum, patches, inhalers, lozenges and sprays. They provide nicotine which allows you to quit smoking without feeling the need to smoke. The amount of nicotine which you get should get lower over time until you stop taking it. It is easier if a nurse or a doctor controls this process.

Another option which also requires help from a doctor relies on taking medications such as Bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix). They can help you with cravings and symptoms of withdrawal of nicotine.

Combo treatments is another possibility. It simply means combining two treatment methods to increase their effectiveness. For example, a nicotine replacement therapy can be compbined with prescribed medications or a nicotine patch can be used together with a nicotine gum. However, it is necessary to consult a doctor before taking this step. 

It is also necessary for you to get rid of cigarettes so they would not tempt you. You should also avoid having contact with smokers so they would not encourage you to smoke. 

To sum up, there are behavioral therapies, a nicotine replacement products and medications. It is also possible to combine a few of them but it may be necessary to consult a doctor to accomplish a success. The most important thing is to make a decision about quitting smoking and holding tight to it for your own good and of those around you.
