A Matter of Life or Death
If a mother does not want to or can't take care of her baby she has several options like putting it up for adoption. But, baby boxes are especially important because they are often the last resort for those mothers. But, what are the benefits of such boxes?
Monica Kelsey from Safe Haven Baby Boxes organisation says that the boxes are useful for mothers who do not want their faces to be seen. So, they may choose this option over other possibilities to remain anonymous.
Baby boxes are also safe. It is much better than leaving a baby by someone's door, especially when it is cold outside. Therefore, it says on the Safe Haven Baby Boxes website that: “In one situation, a newborn baby boy was placed at the entrance of a hospital in a cardboard box, and when the child was finally found, the child had frozen to death and was deceased.”
Kelsey has focused on this cause because she was abandoned as a baby. Her mother was 17 and she had been raped. At first, she wanted to have an abortion but she changed her mind and left her baby at a hospital. Kelsey was then adopted. In 2013 she said: “I just praise God that my birth mother was strong enough to walk out of the abortion clinic.”
