Controlling Own Emotions

Emotional intelligence means identifying, understanding and controlling own emotions. This ability can be learned at any stage of one’s life. To be more specific, emotional intelligence is based on four principles. But, what are they?

The first one is self-awareness which means recognition of your own emotions and their impact on your way of thinking and behaviour. The second one is self-management which means controlling those feelings and behaviours which are impulsive. It also enables you to act independently and to adapt to new circumstances. The third attribute is social awareness which means developing of understanding of others’ emotions and worries. It leads to feeling more comfortable in social situations and in a team. The last element is relationship management which means entering relationships and an ability to maintain them. It is based on good communication. It can also involve working in a team, solving conflicts and motivating others around you.

Emotional intelligence is very important as it has an effect on your performance at work or school because you are often required to cooperate with others. Besides, physical health can be affected by stress through high blood pressure, risk of heart attack, infertility and stress can speed up aging process. Besides, mental health is affected by high stress as it leads to feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression. Lastly, understanding own feelings and those around you and an ability to communicate allows you to create healthy relationships. This is why emotional intelligence is so significant in everyone’s life- as it affects all of those four areas.
