Right of Disabled People to be Born
The most common ground for abortion is disability of an unborn child. But, does the European Union unanimously accept that mothers have such a right?
The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the United Nations stated recently that abortion because of a disability an unborn child constitutes a violation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
It specifically stated that “Laws which explicitly allow for abortion on grounds of impairment violate the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Art,. 4,5,8)”. It is because the assessment perpetuates notions of stereotyping disability as incompatible with a good life”.
Besides, it says that abortion is often carried out based on an innacurate diagnosis.
Therefore, ECLJ has submitted a memorandum to the Human Rights Committee to protect the most basic of all human rights- the right to life. The document has been supplemented with a petition signed by 130,000 people. The work sessions in Geneva concerning this issue will take place on the 27th of October, and 1st and 2nd of November this year.
