Police officers are often perceived as lawkeepers who strictly follow a certain set of rules when on duty. Therefore, civilians may automatically submit to them. Even if their behaviour seems wrong people often feel that there is nothing that they can do because of the position of police officers. But, is it true?

It certainly isn't because you can make a complaint if the behaviour of a police officer or even of a police volunteer was at any time inappropriate. For example, if they were rude or aggressive towards you or another person in your presence. It is also a good basis for a complaint if you have been adversely affected by actions of a police officer, even if it wasn't related to you. A complaint can even be very broad and relate to policing standards.

To make it easier it is allowed that someone makes a complaint on behalf of someone else, but only with their written permission, unless it is your child under 16. But, how can I do it?

You can make a complaint about any inappropriate bahaviour by using 'Make a complaint' section on this website: https://www.policeconduct.gov.uk/complaints-and-appeals/make-complaint. It will forward your complaint to a particular police station.

Luckily, there are no time restrains on making a complaint but it should be made as quickly as possible, so that evidence could be obtained and witness statements collected. Besides, the police can make a decision not to deal with a complaint made more than 12 months after the incident, but you can always try to explain your delay.

Nevertheless, it is always worth to make a complaint even if an incident was minor because we cannot allow the police to act innapropriately in any way. To prevent future incidents of aggressive or rude bahaviour we have to act by opposing such behaviour through a complaint.
