What To Do If You Have Been Treated Unfairly
When an employee has been treated unfairly by his employer, either through dismissal or discrimination at work, he can seek help from an independent organization called ACAS.
Usually, people think that, if they
are still employed, there is nothing that they can do about their uneasy
situation because of fear of dismissal. They only start to think about helding their
employers liable after they have been dismissed or once they decided
to quit their job. Even then, they think that they should hire a lawyer to
represent them in court against their employer. This is why they often refrain
from taking any steps- lack of resources.
But, cases between employers and employees are heard by Employment Tribunals which do not require lawyers. They have been created to allow citizens without legal knowledge to represent themselves in a less formal way. Judges who hear these cases are aware of lack of legal training of the parties and so do not expect eloquent speeches. They only want to hear your version of the story.
It does not sound terryble but there is an even easier way to solve any issues. It is through ACAS. This organisation offers necessary advice to parties of employment disputes to allow them to solve any issues in an informal way. The only difficulty is that both parties must agree to use it's help as it is voluntary.
